Can I use Wayfinder in other countries than my home country?

  1. How much does it cost to download a route?

It depends on the GPRS tariffs of your operator. Normally there will be approximately 5kB of data downloaded for every hour of driving (download of map is not included).

  2. How much does the Wayfinder service cost after the first 12 months?

The second year is €99 +VAT and the third year is €66 +VAT.

  3. Can I buy only the service if I already have the GPS unit?

Yes, you can. The suggested end-user price is € 249.

  4. What happens if I get off my route?

You will be asked to re-route by pressing one button, or you can configure the application to reroute automatically. When re-routing, the server is connected and a new optimised route is downloaded.

  5. Am I connected all the time?

Yes and no. Data is only downloaded when performing search or getting a route or map. The GPS connection is established according to the settings in the phone - but since no data is transmitted this does not cost anything.

  6. How much memory requires Wayfinder?

Wayfinder occupies about 750 kB of memory space, but 1500 kB must be available during the installation.

  7. What happens if I don’t have any GPRS coverage?

If you have access to GSM data you can use that. Otherwise you have to wait until you get GPRS coverage again. If you loose GPRS coverage during navigation it’s OK unless you leave the route and want to download a new route.

  8. Why does the service only work on certain phones?

In order to create an application that uses both an external device like a GPS and plays voice instructions, a more powerful operating system like Symbian is needed.

  9. Do I have to have a special subscription from my operator?

You need to have a GPRS subscription.

  10. Will the application still work if my phone is replaced?

The first time the user connects to the server the username is associated with the specific phone the user has. If the user changes phone he needs to contact the help desk in order to unlock the subscription from the old phone.

  11. Can I use the Bluetooth GPS unit with other devices?

Yes, it is a generic GPS device that supports the NMEA protocol and can be used with all Bluetooth enabled devices like laptops and PDA’s.

  12. How accurate is the GPS unit?

Normally between 5 and 10 meters.

  13. How long is the battery time of the GPS?

    Approximately 6 hours.

  14. Will the application affect the battery time on my phone?

Yes, Wayfinder has an active Bluetooth connection and that require some power. The background light of the display consumes a lot of power, but you can adjust how this is hadled in a setting in Wayfinder.

  15. Can I ”see” where I am while navigating?

Yes, you can see the current position on a map and also the GPS-coordinates in the information view.

  16. What can I search for?

You can search for countries, cities, streets, points of interests, company names and much more.

  17. How often are the maps updated?

Currently the maps are updated 4 times every year. Apart from that Wayfinder will also correct errors in the map that are reported from the users. Later on during 2003, Wayfinder and TeleAtlas will pilot TeleAtlas’ new dynamic map update, which means that new map additions and corrections will be implemented immediately in the Wayfinder server.

  18. Can I use Wayfinder on water and outdoors?

The data from the GPS receiver (coordinates and heading) is always available and you can always get a map with a surrounding area. In the future we will look into the possibility of providing sea maps.

  19. Is traffic information included?

From 1/10 2003 the Wayfinder service in Sweden and Germany will include full dynamic traffic information in order to inform the users and when calculating the optimal routes in selected countries. More information about when this service will be available for other countries will be added within short.

  20. Can I use Wayfinder in other countries than my home country?
